Dr. Jonathan Karch
Dr. Jonathan Karch was born in Johnston and raised in the Des Moines area. He completed his undergraduate studies in biomedical engineering and psychology at the University of Iowa. He then remained in Iowa City to obtain his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.
Following graduation from dental school, Dr. Karch and his wife moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he practiced as a hospital dentist providing comprehensive and emergency care to the Native Alaskan and Native American populations at the Alaska Native Medical Center. Dr. Karch also made regular trips to the Aleutian island of Atka to provide care to the residents of one of the most remote communities in the United States. He still maintains his Alaska dental license and makes occasional trips to work (and play!).
Upon the birth of their first child, the Karch family returned home to Johnston. Practicing dentistry in Des Moines, Dr. Karch had the opportunity to work in great practices alongside excellent providers but always knew he wanted to establish a practice in Johnston that embodied all the principles he values.
Dr. Karch ensures that every aspect of your visit will be individually and specifically tailored to provide the most comfortable, relaxing, and productive experience possible. The compliment he values most is an anxious patient describing their dental experience as the best they’ve ever had. He understands the dental office is not always the most exciting place to be and goes the extra mile every day to change that perception.
Dr. Karch loves the continual technological and material advances in dentistry and the benefits it allows him to provide his patients. As such, he annually obtains five times the required amount of continuing education hours. He’s a proud member of many organizations committed to achieving excellence in dentistry including:
- American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
- American Academy of Implant Dentistry
- Academy of General Dentistry
- Iowa Academy of General Dentistry
Dr. Karch met his wife Danielle at the University of Iowa while she was completing her doctorate in pharmacy. Dr. Karch and Danielle are the proud parents of two little ones: Hudson and Violette. They reside in Johnston and enjoy spending their time biking, camping, traveling, and spending time with family.
Dr. Connor Elmitt
Dr. Connor Elmitt first moved to Johnston in 1993. After graduating from Johnston High School in 2007, he attended the University of Iowa. While pursuing his degree, Dr. Elmitt lettered in track and field and was recognized as an All-Academic performer.
He received early admittance into the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and graduated in 2014. During his time in dental school, he was awarded the American Academy of Oral Medicine Award, given to the senior student showing the most promise in Oral Medicine. He also earned the Delta Dental Foundation Award for Excellence in Geriatric and Special Needs Dentistry for demonstrating exceptional clinical proficiency and understanding of the complex oral health needs of the elderly and medically compromised patient.
Following graduation, Dr. Elmitt returned home to Johnston to practice dentistry. After four years working as an associate, he teamed up with his classmate and friend, Dr. Jonathan Karch, to start the Dental Studio of Iowa. He has seen Johnston grow over the past 25 years and is excited to be able to give back to the community that helped to raise him by offering comprehensive care in an advanced, yet comfortable way. Dr. Elmitt enjoys the clinical aspects of dentistry, but the most rewarding part of his profession has always been the relationships with the people he is privileged to serve.
Outside of work, Dr. Elmitt prefers to spend his time with his family and friends, most of which are still located in and around the Johnston area. He and his wife Becky have one son, Bradley, and are expecting a daughter in December. Dr. Elmitt is a member of the Johnston Rotary Club and serves as a volunteer coach for the Johnston High School Boy’s Track and Field Team.
